Keto Diet Fats: The Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Fats for Ketosis

Why Are Fats So Important on the Keto Diet?

On a ketogenic diet, fat is your primary fuel source — providing 70-80% of your daily calories. When you drastically reduce carbohydrates (typically to under 20-50g per day), your body enters ketosis, a metabolic state where it burns fat for energy instead of glucose. The quality and type of fat you eat directly affects how well you feel, perform, and maintain ketosis.

Not all fats are equal on keto. The best keto fats are stable, nutrient-dense, and minimally processed. The worst are industrially processed seed oils that promote inflammation and oxidative stress — exactly the opposite of what a healthy ketogenic diet aims to achieve.

What Are the Best Fats for the Keto Diet?

Beef tallow: One of the top keto cooking fats. Zero carbs, high smoke point, excellent stability, and rich in fat-soluble vitamins when sourced from grass-fed cattle. Tallow provides a clean source of energy-dense calories that are essential for maintaining ketosis. Our Organic Grass-Fed Beef Tallow is a keto kitchen essential.

Butter and ghee: Rich in butyrate, vitamin K2, and CLA. Butter adds flavour to everything, while ghee handles higher cooking temperatures. Both are zero-carb and keto-friendly. Grass-fed versions have better nutritional profiles.

Extra virgin olive oil: Rich in monounsaturated oleic acid and polyphenol antioxidants. Best used for low-heat cooking, salad dressings, and drizzling over finished dishes. A cornerstone of Mediterranean-style keto approaches.

Coconut oil and MCT oil: Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that are rapidly converted to ketones, making them particularly useful for maintaining ketosis. MCT oil is a concentrated form that provides an immediate ketone boost.

Egg yolks: A near-perfect keto food. Rich in choline, fat-soluble vitamins, and healthy fats with virtually zero carbs. Pasture-Raised Eggs from naturally foraging hens provide the best nutritional value.

Fatty fish: Salmon, sardines, and mackerel provide omega-3 EPA and DHA — essential fats that most people don't get enough of. Aim for 2-3 servings of fatty fish per week on keto.

Which Fats Should You Avoid on Keto?

Avoid all industrial seed oils: soybean oil, canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, and cottonseed oil. These are high in omega-6 linoleic acid, prone to oxidation, and highly processed. They undermine the anti-inflammatory benefits that make the ketogenic diet effective.

Also avoid trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils) and highly processed "keto" products loaded with artificial ingredients. The best keto diet is built on whole, single-ingredient foods — meat, fish, eggs, natural fats, and non-starchy vegetables.

How Much Fat Do You Need on Keto?

Most people on keto consume 150-200g of fat per day, though this varies based on activity level, body size, and goals. A practical approach: eat enough fat to feel satisfied at each meal without counting exact grams. If you're hungry between meals, you likely need more fat. If you're trying to lose body fat, you can reduce dietary fat intake slightly since your body will use its own stored fat for fuel.

Cooking with beef tallow is one of the easiest ways to increase fat intake — every tablespoon adds approximately 14g of pure fat to your meal. For bulk cooking needs, our Tallow 15KG ensures you never run out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will eating too much fat kick me out of ketosis?

No. Excess fat doesn't affect ketosis — only excess carbohydrates (and to a lesser extent, excess protein) can knock you out of ketosis. However, eating more fat than your body needs for energy will slow fat loss since your body will burn dietary fat before stored body fat.

Is beef tallow better than coconut oil for keto?

Both are excellent keto fats with different strengths. Coconut oil provides MCTs for rapid ketone production. Beef tallow provides a more complete nutritional profile with fat-soluble vitamins and CLA. For cooking, tallow is more versatile due to its neutral flavour and higher smoke point. Ideally, use both.
